This Saturday, April 20th, hundreds will take to the water wearing flower hats, using empty bottles as paddles, and donning every other combination of costumes and creative implements imaginable.

The Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race is hosted by the Bangor Department of Parks & Rec every year in the third week of April, is the largest paddling event in New England and one of the largest in the country.

The 16.5 mile race begins in the Town of Kenduskeag and ends near the stream's junction with the Penobscot River in downtown Bangor.

As flamboyant as crews will get with their outfits and gear, they will certainly be safe. Numerous safety and support crews, largely volunteers, are there to ensure a safe experience for race participants.

Today (Thursday 4/18) is your last day to preregister online for $35 per paddler. Tomorrow (Friday) and on race day it's $50 per paddler. Just remember - if you register for this race, you gotta show up in your very best. Got any fake flowers?
