Beach Erosion Forcing Popular Maine State Park to Limit Visitors
Visiting a beach along the beautiful Maine coastline in the summer is a true joy in life. There's nothing quite like the soft sand between your toes, the crashing of the waves and sounds of nature around you.
But one of the most popular beach destinations in the Pine Tree State is warning visitors to plan ahead because they may not get a chance to do any of those things.
Popham Beach State Park in Maine is Struggling This Season With Beach Space
For several years now, Popham Beach State Park has been ringing the alarms over beach erosion and how it affects visitors coming to enjoy a day at the park.
In 2025, many of those unheard warning have hit people directly in face as they've been turned away from visiting at the gates.
For most of the summer, Popham Beach has reminded potential guests that during high tide hours, there is very limited beach space. When this occurs, the park closes their gates until high tide moves out to avoid beach overcrowding.
The Loss of Sand Dunes at Popham Beach Has Been a Major Problem
Like many beaches across Maine, the ecosystem that keeps them pristine is fragile. Beach erosion has been a problem for years, but Popham Beach saw a historic storm surge that crushed their sand dunes last year.
According to WGME, that loss of sand dunes has directly affected how the state park operates this season. The state park has been carefully monitoring their dunes and the hope is that the plan they have will help restore the sand dunes over time and get Popham Beach back to a thriving ecosystem.
