9 Major Retailers That Could Close Maine Stores in 2025
There are some major retailers in America that will be sad to see 2024 go. From Walmart to Costco to Amazon, it was another banner year for many.
But other retailers are still not faring quite as well. From large pharmacies to specialty footwear to some of America's most treasure mall icons, 2024 proved to be a tough year.
According to MSN, many of those struggling retailers will need to find a fix in 2025. As many shoppers know by now, that fix is often to close underperforming locations and liquidate assets.
Here are 9 major brands that could choose to close stores in Maine in 2025.
JC Penney
The writing has seemed to be on the wall for one of America's oldest operating retail chains. JC Penney isn't ready to give up but it is still in the dreaded 'restructuring' phase. Maine has already seen a JC Penney closure and its remaining Maine stores will be under the microscope in 2025 as the chain looks to focus on key markets exclusively.
Walgreens
Walgreens spent most of 2024 under financial fire, promising it would assess and close underperforming stores across the country in phases. That included a list of potential Maine closures that Walgreens claims isn't official. It's likely several Walgreens locations in Maine will face closure sooner rather than later, leaving many communities in a potential pharmacy desert.
Family Dollar
Discount store competition is suddenly fierce, leaving one of America's most notable names in discount offerings in deep financial trouble. Family Dollar plans to close hundreds of underperforming stores across the nation in 2025. They also plan to close stores where leases are up for renewal as a cost-saving measure. That could spend the end for several locations in Maine.
Macy's
Macy's remains an anchor for many malls across the nation, including the Maine Mall, but the future of those stores remains in question. Macy's plans to close some of worst performing stores in 2025 and begin to open small-format stores as well as enhance their online footprint in an attempt to keep the brand alive and healthy.
Victoria's Secret
Perhaps a little under the radar, financial struggles have opened the door for change at Victoria's Secret. The retailer is in the process of enhancing its online footprint while simultaneously closing some brick-and-mortar stores in 2025. Maine seems unlikely to be part of the closure list but stranger things have happened.
Best Buy
One of the stores that seems to be best adapting to financial pressures and massive changes is Best Buy. The brand has been undergoing major in-store changes, from eliminating physical media offerings to upgrading tech equipment and appliances. Best Buy still plans to close several stores in 2025 but things are starting to turn around for the company.
Foot Locker
Foot Locker is likely to be the major retailer on this list that closes the most stores nationwide in 2025. Foot Locker blames declining malls for their financial peril and will focus their attention towards online sales and closing hundreds of stores across the country next year. The end could be coming for Foot Locker in Maine.
7-Eleven
Convenience store giant 7-Eleven hasn't hid from their plans to close stores across the country in 2025. They company plans to asses the performance of their current stores and its future prospects based on market conditions. If that's the case, most of the 7-Eleven locations in Maine seem safe for next year.
CVS
Similar to Walgreens, CVS is facing a changing landscape when it comes to nationwide pharmacies. CVS has already announced plans to close many locations in 2025 alongside a reimagining of many existing stores as the company puts more focus on healthcare services and less on pure retail.
