There's not a meal out I miss more than the family dinner at Hu Shang. The former Portland Chinese restaurant was amazing, and very successful until a sibling rivalry turned ugly. But that's another story for another day.

Other than the great family memories, Hu Shang also represented my first experience with Asian (or Asian-American) cuisine.

It was also one of the few Asian restaurants I remember in the late 1980s and early 1990s in the area. However, times have certainly changed, and for the better.

Maine's largest city is now loaded with Chinese, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese, Middle Eastern, and other ethnic restaurants. Many, like Panda Garden and Saeng Thai, have been staples in the community for decades. Others have been James Beard nominated, like Bao Bao Dumpling House, CÔNG TỬ BỘT, and Norimoto Bakery.

Portland also has many Asian markets, as as well as a handful of food carts and trucks that can be found throughout the city. Portland has delightfully embraced a continent that is incredibly diverse in flavors, culture, and concept.

With there being so many great options here in Portland, I decided to put together a list of them all...or at least as many I could find. This delicious database includes any restaurants, food trucks and carts, markets, and shops that serve Asian-inspired food.

I hope this list excites many to potentially try new places or types of food they never have. We are lucky to have such wonderful food diversity in such a small town.
