For the past several years, locals and visitors have flocked to Thompson's Point during the coldest months of the year for a chance to ice skate outdoors on the oceanfront.

But as Thompson's Point continue to push forward their plans to make the area a four-season destination, the Rink at Thompson's Point won't open this coming winter as permanent improvements are put into place.

Shared on Facebook by The Rink at Thompson's Point, while there will be no ice skating during the winter of 2022-2023, it is not a permanent closure. Instead, the development at Thompson's Point continues as it transforms from a semi-permanent destination to a permanent one. Many improvements have been made in recent years, including construction projects like the Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine. Now, it's time to focus on the rink and more.

Thompson's Point plans to use the fall, winter, and spring to work on the depot pavilion. The pavilion sees a lot of action year-round, from hosting festivals, concerts, and their popular sunset celebrations, to several months of outdoor ice skating that's difficult to find in the Portland area. Thompson's Point plans to construct a permanent food and beverage structure for the depot pavilion, install a boat dock for access to the Fore River, and also make some much needed infrastructure improvements for the rink that will allow it to run more efficiently (and perhaps have additional hours).

Thompson's Point hopes to complete the projects on the depot pavilion by the summer of 2023.
