New England Winter Survival: 10 Things You Need in Your Car
Ah, winter in New England—If you're not prepared, you might find yourself stranded on the side of I-95, seriously questioning your life choices, while battling frostbite. So, here are 10 things every New Englander should have in their car when winter hits.
1. Ice Scraper & Snow Brush – Because clearing a peephole to drive isn’t just illegal; it’s also dangerous and let’s be honest–not very smart.
2. Shovel – You’ll thank me when your car is plowed in for the third time this week. You can even get one of those collapsable ones that should fit perfectly in the trunk.
3. Sand or Kitty Litter – Not for your emotional support cat, but for traction when your car inevitably gets stuck in a snowbank.
4. Jumper Cables – Because winter kills batteries... and let's be honest, these should have a permanent home in your car during all four seasons.
5. Blanket & Extra Layers – In case your car breaks down and AAA gives you a 4-hour ETA because everyone else is also broken down or stuck in a snowbank on the side of the road.
6. Flashlight & Batteries – Because your phone could be dead when you need it most.
7. Snacks & Water – Hopefully the tow truck arrives before your stomach starts growling, but it’s never a bad idea to be prepared for a longer than preferred wait for help.
8. Portable Phone Charger – I am a huge advocate for these. A dead phone means no help and what else will you have to keep your mind off of the bitter cold temps while you wait.
9. First Aid Kit – For the inevitable ice-related mishaps.
10. Common Sense – Sadly, this one isn't sold in stores, but if you have it, it should decrease your chances of actually needing a lot of the essentials above.
Stay safe out there. And for the love of all things holy, clear the snow off your roof before you drive—unless you enjoy blinding yourself or the person behind you with a mini avalanche.
