Watch Video of Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington Breaking Ankle Playing Basketball
Linkin Park have released their latest episode of LPTV, a YouTube series that chronicles the band members’ lives on and off the road. In the clip, it is revealed that Chester Bennington injured his ankle earlier this year while playing basketball, and you can see the moment the injury actually happened. Check out the video above (we've set it to start right before he begins the layup that led to the broken ankle.)
Bennington is shown playing basketball in Indianapolis with a bunch of guys including Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda and Of Mice & Men's Phil Manansala. While you do not see his actual fall, the video angle shows Bennington head towards the camera to do a layup on a basketball hoop off-camera, then you see all of the players at another net turn and look. The camera pans and Bennington is on the ground rolling around in pain. He is eventually taken off the court in a wheel chair.
The singer’s ankle injury forced Linkin Park to cancel all of the tour dates they had remaining for The Hunting Party Tour earlier this year, and in late January, Bennington had surgery on his ankle sharing photos of his stitches with fans. The singer is being resourceful with his recovery time, as he’s been using it to record with his other group, Stone Temple Pilots.
STP guitarist, Dean Deleo, talked with radio station WAAF-FM in late February saying that the frontman is “healing pretty quickly” because of his positive mindset, despite his serious injury. “He hurt himself badly. It was not only a break — the guy tore darn near every ligament in his ankle,” DeLeo said to host Mistress Carrie. “They had to go in on each side. He has about a five-inch incision on each side. They had to go in and assemble a big bowl of spaghetti.”
His speedy recovery is good news for STP and LP fans because both bands have tour dates looming. Stone Temple Pilots are supposed to start touring in April, while Linkin Park has dates marked for May, including the inaugural Loudwire Music Festival on June 26.
