Watch Smashing Pumpkins Cover Hole’s ‘Malibu’ + David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’
The Smashing Pumpkins kicked off their In Plainsong tour last night (March 22) in Portland, Ore., and they did so with a career-spanning set list that included covers of Hole, David Bowie and more.
Lucky for those of us not in attendance, a few fans caught those covers on film. You can see the Smashing Pumpkins tackle Hole’s Celebrity Skin song “Malibu” -- which Billy Corgan co-wrote -- up above. Australian singer-songwriter Katie Cole, who’s a member of the Pumpkins’ touring band, handled vocals for the song. Corgan, however, helmed the soaring cover of “Space Oddity.” You can see a clip of that performance at the bottom of the page. The set list also included a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Angie,” Zwan’s “Jesus, I/Mary Star of the Sea” and five consecutive songs from Siamese Dream.
The In Plainsong tour continues tonight in Seattle with more North American stops planned through the end of next month. Liz Phair is serving as the opening act and original Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has returned to the lineup for the jaunt.
