The Washington Post attempted to figure out what the smartest and dumbest states in the country were by using some simple statistical data at their disposal. They used SAT scores, ACT scores, IQ scores and the percentage of college graduates as the baseline to determine who's smart, and who isn't.

To the surprise of some, the state of Massachusetts rolled in as the smartest state in the country. The rest of the top 5 looks like this:

Right outside the top 5 you'll find another New England state at no. 7, Vermont. Additionally, Maine isn't THAT far behind. Maine ranked no. 19 on this list, dragged down by poor SAT scores throughout the state. Had Maine's SAT results been just average, the state would have been in the Top 10 smartest states in the country.

While New England is clearly thriving, the south is clearly struggling. The bottom 10 states include Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama amongst others. Check out a detailed description of the "intelligence" process as well a full graph and rankings for all 50 states here courtesy of the Washington Post.

So what do you think? Is Massachusetts the smartest state in the county in your opinion? Should Maine rank higher or lower?
