According to the Portland Press Herald, the Portland Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee are asking the city to extend parking meter hours in Portland until 9pm, in effort to garner some funds for some future projects.

Since this story broke this morning, most people I've come in contact with are severely against this proposition. There's the obvious hassle and extra cost that comes along with the extended hours. Local businesses are also speaking out with their concerns of affecting business. It will also affect workers in the service industry and beyond that work at night.

The city currently has 1,525 parking meters that will run you a $1/hour and are in effect Monday through Saturday from the hours of 9am to 6pm. The meters currently bring in about $4.6 million a year to the city.
