Maine Native Mackenzie Holmes Selected by Seattle in WNBA Draft

A familiar face to Mainers is heading to the WNBA.

Following an incredible collegiate career at Indiana, former Gorham High School standout Mackenzie Holmes is taking her talents to the professional level. Holmes was selected in the 3rd Round of the WNBA Draft by the Seattle Storm (26th overall pick). This is a very deserving accomplishment for Holmes, who continues to make Mainers proud.

Homes was an absolute star at Gorham High School, leading the Rams to numerous championships while breaking records left and right. She would finish her high school career as Gorham's all-time leader in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots. Her high school career would be capped off by winning Maine Gatorade Player of the Year.

Her next step would be playing collegiately at Indiana, where she would have the opportunity to face incredibly strong competition. Holmes had a dynamic five-year career at Indiana, which included a plethora of awards. Let's give you a taste of some of those.

Holmes also helped lead the Hoosiers to the tournament every single year she was there (excluding the cancelled tournament year in 2020 due to COVID), which included a trip to the Elite 8, two Sweet 16's, and a Round of 32.

The Gorham native now is set to make her professional debut, one that unfortunately needs to be delayed. Holmes announced she will be having a procedure to fix a recurring knee issue she has that dates back to her high school days. This means she will be missing the entire 2024 season, but should be good to go in 2025.

Seattle was clearly not deterred by this, considering the franchise used one of its two picks on the Indiana big, a true sign of what the Storm believe Holmes can provide them in the future.

Congrats to Mackenzie for all of her accomplishments so far. It's been a fun ride to watch, especially for all of us Gorham High grads. It's an incredible story that just continues to be written. I wish her nothing but the best in her recovery, and look forward to her WNBA debut in 2025.
