Some Mainers Will Now Have Until This Summer to File Taxes

This past winter came with unforeseen circumstances that left many Mainers in the cold without heat for days, and even worse, extensive damage to their homes.

There were several natural disasters during the winter of 2024, but the one that likely sticks out the most was the severe storms and flooding that ripped through Maine, beginning on January 9.

According to News Center Maine, the IRS recently announced that some individuals and businesses affected by severe storms and flooding in January will now have until July 15, 2024, to file their taxes, which the State of Maine Revenue Services matched. These counties include Cumberland, Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo, Washington, and York.

You might have gotten wind of the previous extension granted by the IRS and the State of Maine, which was announced prior as a result of the December storms, and allowed certain counties until June 17.

This additional one-month extension also came with four additional counties that were affected by the storms – Cumberland, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, and York – which will likely be a sigh of relief for those still involved in any ongoing recovery efforts.

It's important to know that not all Mainers have the option for an extension, and with several counties having separate deadlines, it can be confusing. These are the current deadlines, according to News Center Maine.

Aroostic County – April 17, 2024
Androscoggin, Franklin, Kennebec, Oxford, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Somerset – June 17, 2024
Cumberland, Hancock, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo, Washington, York – July 15, 2024
