All of The Businesses Coming to The Downs in Scarborough, Maine

For a few generations of people in Maine, Scarborough was known for having one of the largest harness racing tracks you could find anywhere in the state.

Scarborough Downs spent decades being a tourist attraction for those fascinated by horse racing.

Scarborough Downs first opened in 1950 and operated all the way until November of 2020. The 577 acre property was eventually sold and over the past few years, a massive redevelopment has been underway.

More Than 600 Residential Units Have Been Built At The Downs in Scarborough, Maine

Similar to other major redevelopments in Maine, The Downs project has been working in phases over the past few years.

Part of its early phase was to construct hundreds of residential units that vary in size, scope and luxury.

That portion of the redevelopment project has been a success as The Downs is now home to over 600 new dwellings and more than 1,000 residents.

The First Costco in Maine Was a Huge Step For The Downs in Scarborough, Maine

While residential development has been the primary focus for The Downs project initially, commercial development has always been part of the plan.

A cornerstone of that commercial development was bringing the first Costco location to Maine.

That has been a smashing success as the Scarborough, Maine, Costco is perpetually busy.

Other commercial and industrial space has been filled as part of The Downs project. There are prep kitchens and offices for well-known brands like Highroller Lobster Co. and Cargo Pizza.

Allagash Brewing also opened their bungalow as a satellite brewery for residents of the new neighborhood.

Now, there's even more businesses coming with several more expected to join The Downs in the not-too-distant future.
