Due to a bankruptcy claim, Payless ShoeSource will close 400 stores nationwide, including the one in Biddeford immediately. For more than three decades, Payless ShoeSource has been a nationwide staple for discounted shoes that looked and felt like something far more expensive. Because of its success, the chain quickly spread across the country and popped up in almost every major mall from state-to-state. But as shopping styles change across the world, Payless is yet another retailer that is feeling the squeeze.

According to Yahoo, the retailer will close 400 stores nationwide immediately in an attempt to restructure due a bankruptcy claim. That will include the Payless location at Biddeford Crossing and 3 other locations in Downeast and Northern Maine.

For now, other notable locations, including the one inside the Maine Mall will stay open. The company plans to "aggressively manage" the locations staying open in hopes of turning the company around.
