25 Years Ago: Staind Played Small Club in Portland, Maine
The year 2000 being 25 years ago is the kind of timeline glitch that makes me question reality. For me, 2000 was all about uprooting to Portland from North Conway, NH and starting work at WCYY. Not sure how that was a quarter of a century ago, but that’s what the calendar says.
Just a couple of months before I relocated to Maine, one of the first rock shows of the year happened. It was with a band who had just released their breakthrough single “Mudshovel” a couple of months before. Staind, out on the road promoting their Dysfunction album played at the Asylum, which you may know has since been renovated and expanded to Aura.
These Boston boys took off quickly and were not playing small club shows much longer after this, especially once they released 2001’s Break The Cycle, which included the monster crossover hit “It’s Been Awhile”, which launched them into playing for much larger crowds in much larger venues.
A fansite named Angelfire, which is dubbed as “The Concert Zone” was put together by a fan that logged every show he ever went to, including Staind at The Asylum 25 years ago where he mentions: “My cousin, Aric got kicked out cause he accidently hit the disco ball off the ceiling. Bastards!!!!” I’m not sure how that accidentally happens, although now that I think of it, I do remember the ceilings being a little on the low side.
It's always a great flex when you can say you caught a band in a tiny club before they blew up and started headlining amphitheaters.
Here’s the setlist from that night:
