Maine's lobster industry is getting hit hard with the so-called "red-listing" of lobster caught in the Gulf of Maine and Senator Angus King and Representative Jared Golden are preparing to hit back.

In 2021, Maine's lobster industry took in $725 million, the most money in history. Now that kind of a haul is threatened after the Seafood Watch published by California's Monterey Bay Aquarium, recommended that Maine lobster be avoided because of the claimed dangers to North Atlantic right whales who could become tangled in lobster fisherman's gear.

Governor Mills fought back against the claim in September:

“This designation is flat out wrong. It sends the wrong message about Maine lobster, and it insults thousands of hardworking lobstermen who risk their lives to put food on the table while practicing responsible stewardship and taking action to protect whales. Consumers and businesses must see through this list and recognize that lobstermen are partners in conservation and sustainability and that the delicious Maine lobster can and should continue to be enjoyed.”

This week, Senator Angus King and Congressman Jared Golden are teaming up to create a bill to hit right back at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

According to Maine Biz, the bill is named "The Red Listing Monterey Bay Aquarium Act," and if passed, it will give the aquarium a taste of its own medicine, by halting the taxpayer funds received by the aquarium.

Jared Golden said in a press release, "Institutions like Monterey Bay Aquarium that claim to be scientific but openly flout available evidence and data should not receive taxpayer funds. It's that simple."

Senator Susan Collins and Congresswoman Chellie Pingree have agreed to be co-sponsors of the bill.

Don't mess with one of Maine's most important industries with false claims, or you may get the lobster by claws. Okay, that was a bad Dad joke kind of thing, but I couldn't help myself.
