Bangor Votes to Replace Columbus Day With a New Holiday
For 80 years, Columbus Day has been a federal holiday in the United States recognizing the arrival of Christopher Columbus' in the Americas. This year however, Bangor will not be recognizing it as Columbus Day.
According to WMTW, the Bangor City Council has voted to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day in reognition of the people who lived here before Columbus arrived.
In a document realased after the council vote, it was noted that the Bangor area has several tribes of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas and the new holiday will "recognize and celebrate the Indigenous Peoples" of the region.
As far as doing business, nothing changes. Banks, post offices and all federal agaencies will be closed on October 9 as always in Bangor.
