It's not dogs or cats or even ferrets. It's chickens!

According to the new 2024 Farmers' Almanac, having a chicken as a pet has grown in popularity from 8% to 13%. Three things to know about chickens...

Chickens love basking in the sun.

Who knew chickens liked to sunbathe? Oh wait, the Farmers' Almanac did! They love being warm and spreading their wings helps get rid of parasites. I'm gonna try that at the beach.

Chickens love classical music.

Play a little classical music in the chicken coop, and find that the eggs you collect are bigger and heavier. And if you are allergic to cats and dogs, chickens are the way to go. They even purr like cats when they are happy.

Chickens have a ton of compassion.

You think your dog gets you with those big eyes? Nope. It's a chicken that understands emotions like happiness and sadness, and can also recognize up to 100 faces. I bet they all have Purdue's face memorized!

Chickens can make a great pet as long as you give them a protected and insulated chicken coop. Don't forget to give them some running room and loose dirt for their daily 'dust baths'. Feed them a healthy diet, fresh water, and just love them. Now, before you go running out for your new bestie, a chicken isn't for everyone. And you have a lot to think about before you become a friendly Colonel Sanders. But, maybe fresh eggs in the morning and a new cuddle buddy are in your future.
