Sometimes in Maine, I scratch my head at some intersections, but this one takes the cake.

As you are traveling Route One in Falmouth toward the miracle mile, you cross the intersection to Route 88. I like to think of Route 88 as the road with all the expensive mansions. It's the fancy Foreside part of Falmouth. I'm always a little embarrassed to tell people I live in Falmouth and am quick to point out - I don't like on Foreside, I live on Poorside.

From this vantage point, it looks like what a highway entrance looks like from overhead. But it's not a highway entrance, it's an intersection to get from Route One over to Route 88. Something must have happened to have this crazy configuration. For as messed up as it is, I don't think there are a lot of accidents. Surprising, because with all the stops and yields and turns - it screams accident. I think it's worse than Morrills Corner in Portland.

As far as intersections go, it's a pretty normal three-way (careful). It's the businesses that make Morrills Corner harder than it really is. Then you add some railroad tracks and a ton of traffic and it's a place to avoid and can't. When I moved to Maine almost four decades ago, I thought the roads and intersections were nuts. I've always thought that roads were done by planners spilling spaghetti on the floor and saying, 'Westbrook!'

Maine is an old state, and I'm sure back in the day when roads were being laid out and things kept changing - they just kept adding on. No wonder you can't get there from here.
