Once upon a time, going to the movies was something everyone did in America. Grab some buttery popcorn and a soda, and get ready to be blown away by the big screen and powerful sound.

But the movie theater industry hasn't fully recovered from the pandemic. Many theater chains across the country have closed permanently. Maine felt that as well, when Cinemagic closed rather abruptly.

So while everyone seems to have an 80-inch television and surround sound in their living room, some theaters have had to get creative. What else can they offer to get people to come back out to see new movies and some of their old favorites? Look and feel different. That's what The Gem in Bethel, Maine, is doing.

If you happen to be traveling towards Sunday River, The Gem is rather difficult to miss. The building stands out with its bright yellow and orange facade.

It may scream "museum" from the outside, but inside, it still feels like a mom-and-pop movie theater. The Gem shows first-run movies with a rotating list of new releases always coming through. Not only that, but The Gem features live music performances, poetry readings, and more.

And since watching movies at home always features snacks, The Gem offers libations as well. Flatbread pizza in different varieties, popcorn, and stuffed pretzels are always on the menu. Plus, The Gem offers a rotating list of local craft beer to enjoy a cold one before, during, or after the show.

The Gem is located at 49 Cross Street in Bethel.
