Over the last year, there have been a lot of notable food places in Portland, Maine, that have closed down permanently. The majority of those closures came to be thanks to rising costs, whether that be for labor, supplies or something else.

That something else can often be rent. Most restaurants and cafes throughout Portland don't own their space, they lease. As property taxes and valuations rise, so does rent on individuals and businesses. And it can cause some strain in relationships between tenants and landlords

Hifi initially started in 2017 and quickly rose in popularity. It's been heralded by national publications as one of the best donut shops in Maine. Many weekends in the summer, you'll see lines sprawling outside of the quaint shop.

Is This Going to be The End of Hifi Donuts?

Inside of their social media post, there is hope that this lease dispute won't mean the end of operations fully for Hifi Donuts. But that isn't a definitive statement. Hifi is hopeful to find a new location to operate and start the next chapter of their story.

The question will be, is it going to be in Portland, Maine, or somewhere else nearby? For now, Hifi Donuts is inviting everyone to visit them one more time before their 30 City Center location permanently closes on April 17.
