The last few years have been tough for many brick-and-mortar retailers.  In some cases, we have seen these chains close at least some (if not all) of their stores.  In other cases, they have made drastic shifts to how they conduct business.

Why are they having issues?  There are several reasons, but the biggest is probably the prevalence of online shopping.  Placing an order on a website, or through an app, is generally a lot more efficient than driving to a store and walking the aisles to find the products you need.

It looks as though Central Maine will soon see another permanent closure of a chain retail store.

Staples Office Supply Store

Backed by Bain Capital and guided by board member Mitt Romney, it expanded across North America and Europe, weathered a blocked Office Depot merger, and later diversified into services and partnerships.
