Two small towns in Maine were recently compared to other New England towns that look like they belong in a fairy tale.

It could be just as entertaining to flip the script someday and look at which towns in Maine feel like the opposite—or least like—a fairy tale, and we can certainly think of a few.

So, given that, how does one even determine which towns look more or less like they belong in a fairy-tale book than any others?

World Atlas explains that its selection of ‘8 Fairy-Tale Small Towns in New England’ is based on how real-world places can reflect the magic, royalty, and wonder often found in storybooks. In their methodology, everyday features are reimagined as enchanted settings, making these towns feel like they stepped out of a fairy tale.

With that in mind, which small towns in Maine were among the eight in New England that World Atlas mentioned?

Kennebunkport is a gem, known for its sandy beaches, historic downtown, fresh lobster rolls, and attractions such as Goose Rocks Beach and the Goat Island Lighthouse.

World Atlas continues by highlighting Kennebunkport’s vibrant culture, where local favorites such as Mabel’s Lobster Claw have been serving classic Maine seafood since 1953.

Located on Mount Desert Island, Bar Harbor is one of Maine’s most popular destinations with Acadia National Park drawing nearly 4 million visitors a year.

Bar Harbor offers mountain and ocean views, Cadillac Mountain, and plenty of trails to explore. It also highlights cultural sites like the Abbe Museum, serves up (you guessed it) fresh lobster rolls, and features unique spots like the Bar Harbor Lobster Pound, making it a must-visit coastal getaway.
