These are the 5 Most Dangerous Roads in All of Maine
There are tricky roads all over Maine.
There's no question about that. For instance, if you've ever driven Route 7 in Penobscot County, you know it feels like a roller coaster half the time. It's up, it's down, it curves... It goes literally, all over the place. But you don't have to go very far from wherever you may be, to know that roads like this exist all over the state.
We don't live someplace like Iowa, where they have no incline of any kind, practically. In Maine though, we've got nothing but driving challenges. On top of our screwy roads and highways, we also have nasty weather for a good portion of the year we have to contend with. But there are 5 roads in Maine that are more dangerous to drive than all the others. Let's check them out...
US Route 1
This is historically considered the deadliest road in Maine. It's no surprise, really. It goes from the northern tip of Maine, all the way to the southern tip, so you're just tempting fate at that point. Between fog, weather in general, wildlife, and just tons of people using this road year round, it tops the list for danger.
Interstate 95
This has to rival Route 1 for most dangerous. There are constant accidents. Not to mention, people just drive like absolute demons on Maine's highways. Let's be real, it's not the asphalt and the paint that are causing accidents. It's people who can't drive safely. Add in rogue wildlife and weather conditions, and it's a perfect storm.
Interstate 295
I've lost count of how many times I've just been trying to get from Freeport to Portland, and 295 is just a parking lot. It literally feels like there's some kind of accident on there every single day. Think about it for a second... How many times, just this year, have you sat around in traffic for an hour or two on 295?
State Route 15
Most people who've traveled on Route 15 understand it's a long stretch of road in Maine that can take you from Stonington, all the way up to Jackman. Most of the danger on this road is various areas in major disrepair, coupled with many dark, twisty curves. Plus, there's deer and moose everywhere on this road. It's totally treacherous.
US Route 201
This is another road in Maine that basically takes you from the coast, to the Canadian border. Not only that, it's earned the nickname "Moose Alley". I think that speaks volumes about why it's so dangerous. you're definitely going to need to pay twice as much attention as normal through there.
Let's be real here... these are statistically the most dangerous in Maine. There are plenty of local places people could point you to in their hometown that are straight up nightmares. But that's no reason to sleep on these roads... Literally. So be safe, and enjoy the road. Even if it means living on the edge a bit.
