A few years back Food and Wine Magazine highlighted the best hot dog in every state. It was no surprise to me (or literally anyone) that the winning dog in the Granite state was from Gilley's Diner.

Gilley's is an institution! It first opened in 1912 and the legend goes that their very first employee was a guy named Ralph Gilbert also known as Gilley.

The other New England state picks for best hot dog were a little more controversial. I take a deeper dive into that below.

Gilley's has been on an upward trajectory only becoming better and more beloved by the community as the years go on.

A few months back they reopened with a new kitchen manager named John Gray. John is no stranger to the Portsmouth food scene. He worked in the kitchen at Buffalo Wild Wings when they were in Newington, the Thirsty Moose, and most recently Martingale Wharf. He has brought Gilley's to new heights and any rumors about our favorite Fleet Street diner closing have been thrown to the wayside.

This weekend for Father's Day celebrate your dad with the best dog in town from Gilley's. They are calling it dogs for dads and a portion of all hot dog sales on Saturday June 14th will go to New Hampshire SPCA!

Saturday is Market Square day so it's a wonderful time to be downtown Portsmouth anyway!

So as the Facebook post says:

"Bring Dad, grab a dog, and help out some pets in need. Because nothing says “Thanks, Dad” like a good dog and a good deed. 🐾
