Netflix Gave New Englanders the Best Piece of Streaming History With ‘The Roast of Tom Brady’

Between Saturday night's Bruins game and Monday night's Bruins game, many of us opted out of the three-hour-long Netflix special that was The Roast of Tom Brady.

It was live on Netflix at 8 PM on Sunday, May 6, 2024.

Don't worry. They recorded it, and I can confirm it is the best thing that has ever been put on any streaming service.

I know that is a HUGE statement, but this comedy special and roast had so many elements that made me think my outlandish thought: that it is the best piece of streaming history ever.

Good for Comedy:

In a world where cancel culture is way too prevalent, I was nervous this roast would be boring.

I did not know how far boundaries would be tested. They were not tested, because they simply did not exist. Jokes of ALL kinds were made.

I cannot write about some of the jokes here, because they were THAT bad. Not bad as in not good, but bad as in horrifically cringy and beyond hilarious. I was afraid a Will Smith slap situation may occur, but it did not. And for that, I was happy.

Every person who was at the event was a target, and everyone had thick skin. Sure, there were some boos around certain jokes (like any Aaron Hernandez reference). However, for the most part, everything was fair game and within limits.

Good for New England:

If you are not a Patriots/football fan, you will miss 1/3 of the jokes. The Roast of Brady had former players, coaches, and football greats. So naturally, there were a lot of references to specific teams and seasons.

As a football and Patriots fan, I understood every single one, and LOVED the local references and inside jokes.

Good for Everyone:

There was a joke for everyone at this roast. The amount of comedians, football legends, and other guests that came out was unbelievable.

Even if you did not get all of the specific football jokes, you were able to understand the humor.

From Kevin Hart hosting, Will Ferrel as Ron Burgundy, and guests like Ben Affleck, Kim K, Tom Segura & Bert Kreischer, Dana White, Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft, and so many others, the "cast" of those participating was incredible.

Good for the Future:

Roasts have gone away. Most comedians are nervous about cancel culture. Most people cannot take the heat that Brady did. I mean, there were NON-STOP jokes about his ex-wife cheating on him, him being a bad dad, picking football over family, and even his cheating allegations.

Brady took all of the jokes on the chin, like a man. He hardly flinched.

I think this kind of humor is outstanding, and hope these kinds of roasts continue. The fact that it was LIVE is crazy. Which is why we got to see Gronk spike a glass shot glass (wild).

The night was an example that not everything should be taken so seriously, and good, "not-so-clean" humor still has a place in today's world.
