A South Berwick family lost everything, including two pets in a fire early Saturday afternoon.

The South Berwick Fire Department said it was called to a fire that sent a black column of smoke into the air on Knight’s Pond Road around noon. The house is located about 600 feet from the road, which the department said cause a delay in reporting and response.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

Temperatures were in the teens with a wind of 10 mph at the time, combining for a wind chill of three.

Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within an hour, but two dogs died in the fire, according to the South Berwick Fire Department.

Firefighters from Berwick, Dover, Eliot, Newington, Rollinsford, and York also responded to the fire.

Requests for help have already been posted on social media for the family.

Lawa-Na McClellan, an associate broker for Seacoast NH & ME Real Estate, said the family of four lost everything in the fire. She asked anyone who can offer temporary housing to contact her via her Facebook page.

The Maine Stars Cheer Gym said the family was attending a competition at the time of the fire and posted a Q-Code to make a financial donation. The Stars also posted information on clothing donations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
