20 Years Ago: Rock and Metal Ruled Maine’s Stages in September
20 years ago this month, some memorable shows went down here in our great state of Maine. One of the hotspots was the one time club in the college town of Orono, Maine. You may remember Ushuaia, which after several years of hosting concerts was shut down in 2005 after theTown of Orono declined to renew the club's liquor license, in result of rowdy behavior from patrons, with one incident resulting in a fatality, according to Downeast.com.
20 years ago in 2004, the party was still poppin’, with a large amount of rock shows coming to the venue. September in particular was no different. On September 8th, they hosted Paranoid Social Club and 6 Gig, two of Maine’s hottest local bands at the time.
Ten days later on September 18th, Killswitch Engage, Eighteen Visions, 36 Crazyfists, and Nobis took the stage for a night of high-energy, in-your-face live music. The show was a powerhouse of metalcore, which left the crowd buzzing with adrenaline.
The very next night on September 19th, about an hour and 15 mins south in our state's capital of Augusta, Kid Rock played one of his only two shows ever in Maine at the Augusta Civic Center.
Continuing our trip south down to Portland, on September 22, the legendary Alice Cooper blew fans away at the State Theatre with his theatrical rock spectacle with a performance full of props and horror-inspired antics that delivered with his signature over-the-top visuals like fake guillotines and snakes.
