New Data Suggests One-Third of Maine Households Have No Income
One of the largest stresses most people in Maine will face in their lifetime is finances. Bills never seem to go away and how to take care of those expenses and continue to live life can be a complicated matter.
It gets even more complicated when you simply don't have a regular income. That can come in many forms, from working in the service industry, to temp work or strictly receiving income from commissions.
Visual Capitalist has compiled data to show the percentage of households in each state that reported no regular income throughout 2024. The results are rather astounding.
30% of Maine Households Have No Regular income
According to Visual Capitalist, 30% of Maine households have no regular income. That ranks the third-highest percentage in the entire country.
Some of that large percentage can be attributed to Maine's aging population. While some Social Security benefits can be considered income, some are not. That leaves many elderly Mainers without any incomes.
The same applies to those in Maine who are disabled. Most disability payments are not considered income.
Despite those nuances, it's easy to see why Maine can have funding problems in many areas. Nearly one-third of the state's population regularly has no income, pushing a larger burden onto the two-thirds that do.
The National Average For Income-Less Households is 25%
Data from Visual Capitalist suggests that the national average for households with no income is 25%.
While Maine exceeds that average by a fair amount, West Virginia leads the nation in income-less households at 35%.
Utah has the lowest percentage of households with no income in the country at just 17%.
All economic data used was obtained from the United States Census Bureau.
