
Maine State Police Share Heartfelt Message After K9’s Death
Anyone that has suffered the unexpected loss of a pet can understand just how devastating the sudden impact can be. You simply can't believe they're gone.
For police handlers and their K9s, there's an understanding that there is some risk of sudden loss based on the requirements of the job. But just like any good human and dog relationship, the bond is strong and the loss is felt to the soul.
Maine State Police K9 Shot in the Line of Duty
Shared on Facebook, the Maine State Police released the details of an incident in Aroostook County on February 3. A standoff between an individual and police was underway and when the suspect attempted to flee their residence, a K9 unit was deployed in attempt to subdue the suspect.
During that chase, the K9, named Preacher, was shot in the abdomen. That led to further engagement from state police and the suspect involved was killed at the scene. Preacher was immediately rushed to the closest veterinary hospital but unfortunately, Preacher succumbed to his injuries.

Preacher had been partnered with Sgt. Jonathan Russell. The Maine State Police as well as many commenters shared their condolences to Sgt. Russell for the loss of his trusted friend.
The Maine State Police also took the time to remind everyone about the importance of K9 units. They said:
K9 Preacher was more than just a working dog, he was a dedicated partner, a protector, and a hero. Most people will never understand the sacrifices made by our K9 teams but last night, Preacher made the ultimate sacrifice to protect others from harm
