Maine and the people who visit the state have had a complicated relationship for quite some time now. On one hand, most people in Maine are happy to see some new faces, engage in some new conversation and happy to see some new dollars spent at local businesses.

On the other hand, native Mainers get used to a slower paced life and at the height of tourism season, it can feel anything but that. That can cause some frustration and agitation and it can be difficult to hide it.

Maine Ranked in the Middle Among States With the 'Rudest People'

Among one of the broader topics on The Top Tens, it's a list of states with the 'rudest people'. Maine ranked 34 out of 50, which you could argue bodes well for the state and its residents.

But when you dig in on some of the detailed comments, some former visitors to Maine had a lot of things to say. One of the anonymous commenters left this:

Very judgmental people, not welcoming to outsiders, they think that their state is the best in the US, well I have been to all 50 and it is in the top 5 worst states.

The Comments on How 'Rude' Maine People Can Be Didn't Stop There

One person's opinion is just that, an opinion. But when more people begin to pile on, it can be pretty easy to start wondering if they're right. Some additional commenters said this about Maine people:

Maine is disgusting. The people are just so toxic. What people think of as that weirdo "Mainah" hillbilly thing---is actually personality disorder. The people are just so geographically isolated, white, badly educated, afraid of anything different

How about another one?

I've been living in Maine for two years now because I'm going to college here. Everyone that I have met so far who was born and raised here is an a-hole. I try to joke around and be friendly with people but most of them give me a snarky look or a fake smile

And one more.

Insular, provincial and unfriendly to outsiders

Maine is considered a neighborly state but not everyone gets along with their neighbors. Tourist season will be here again before you know it.
