Massachusetts Woman Honored for Saving a Child’s Life (With Help From Steve Carell)

Imagine owing your life to Michael Scott.

Thanks to some quick thinking by a fan of The Office, a young child in Massachusetts will have an even deeper appreciation for the legendary comedy.

In a 2009 episode of the series set at a fictional paper company, Scott, played by Acton, Massachusetts, native Steve Carell, engages in a CPR training demonstration and learns to perform chest compressions at 100 beats per minute.

The instructor notes that the best way to replicate this rhythm is, appropriately, by mimicking the Bee Gees’ song “Stayin’ Alive.”

As reported by NBC Boston, Savennah Mendes-Rodrigues of Abington, Massachusetts, recalled this moment when she was faced with a real-life, life-or-death situation.

The then-19-year-old was inside her family’s home this past summer when she heard screams coming from her mother. It turned out to be in reaction to a young child who was unconscious after falling into the swimming pool.

Luckily, Mendes-Rodrigues is a student at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and CPR-certified. But of all things, she said it was the famous scene from The Office that helped her keep calm during a terrifying moment.

On December 27, Mendes-Rodrigues was honored by the Boston Celtics as part of the team’s “Heroes Among Us” program. She also received the Heartsaver Hero Award from the American Heart Association.
