Popular South Portland Bakery to Reopen Renovated Willard Square Shop
A wildly popular South Portland bakery will be reopening its flagship store this week.
Scratch Baking Co. announced on social media that renovations are complete, and its popular Willard Square location is just about to reopen. The expected opening date is this Thursday, May 26.
The sleuths over at Portland Food Map managed to grab some video of the new space, and it's looking very sharp.
According to Portland Food Map, customers will enter and follow a path by the various stations of bread, bagels, pastries, and more. Coffee and other hot drinks will also be available. The renovated building is set up more efficiently, in an effort to get folks in and out the door smoothly.
This is exciting news for the local and Greater Portland community. The neighborhood bakery is a true success story. First opening in 2004, a combination of hard work and great food has helped build it into an institution.
That institution also includes a toast bar and baking facility, also in South Portland. This location was also a huge help during the renovation. Scratch managed to stay open through the toast bar location to keep the orders coming in, while the Willard shop was being worked on.
Scratch has a tremendous variety of goods. Buns, fresh baguettes, sweet breads, and gooey pastries litter the menu. However, the most popular item might be the enormous and perfectly chewy bagels that tend to sell out quickly. Let's be honest, everything tends to sell out quickly.
According to Portland Food Map, Scratch plans to be open Wednesday to Sunday from 7am to 2pm. The temporary location in Scratch's old toast bar will close for now. However, the bakery did mention there could be future plans for it.
For now, it's back to Willard Square. And I must say, I am looking forward to my first time back in the old building.
