Portland, Maine, Sports Betting Bar Pauses Bets After License Revoked
Maine's first in-person sports betting establishment, Oddfellahs Sportsbook and Bar, has hit a major setback and it seems to have come out of nowhere. Just four months after opening in the Old Port. The bar that's located at the former Big Easy music club on Middle St. announced Friday, via their Facebook page, that it was halting its sports betting operations. The reason? The Gambling Control Unit revoked its sports wagering license.
Owner Michael Cianchette shared on Facebook that the bar’s license was pulled after Gambling Control Unit Executive Director informed him of the decision. Cianchette said he wasn’t given a clear explanation, which has obviously got to be frustrating without any notice or reasoning.
This comes just months after Oddfellahs opened its doors in September, bringing in-person sports betting to the state for the first time. Now, the owner and local sports fans are left wondering what led to the license revocation and what happens next.
In an effort to continue operations, Oddfellahs has appealed the decision. The bar is seeking a resolution through both the Maine Public Safety Commissioner's office and Maine Superior Court, hoping to restore its sports wagering license.
According to the Press Herald, as of Saturday, neither the Gambling Control Unit nor the Public Safety Commissioner’s office have not commented on the situation, leaving many to speculate about what’s next for Oddfellahs and its loyal patrons.
The good news is (I'm a glass is always half full guy) the bar will remain open where patrons can still come to watch some games and have a couple of beers.
