In the world of professional skateboarding, one name instantly comes to mind. Tony Hawk. He is the Tom Brady of skateboarding. The GOAT in his sport and he came to Lewiston with his Birdhouse Team in 2009.

Hawk has been back in the spotlight recently with the release of the HBO documentary Tony Hawk: Until The Wheels Fall Off which is described as "a wide-ranging, definitive look at Hawk’s life and iconic career, and his relationship with the sport with which he’s been synonymous for decades."

The Lewiston Skatepark was the last of a ten-stop tour of the Northeast that Tony Hawk was on in 2009 and hundreds of people turned out to see him.

According to a 2009 article by the Sun Journal, Tony donated $10,000 to the Lewiston Skatepark during his appearance. The Sun Journal also got some video of the event.

The photos above were provided by WMTW Meteorologist Sarah Long, who you may or may not know, opened a skateboard shop with her husband Tom 10 years ago in South Portland called "Long's Board Shop." Tom is an avid skateboarder and has put a lot of work into getting skate parks, like the one in Lewiston, constructed in communities throughout Maine. Sarah tells me that Tom has been working for years to get a skatepark built in South Portland and is finally ready to break ground on it.
