Surprising Map of the Most Spoken Languages in Each New England State

If you’re under the impression that English is the official language of the United States of America, you’re actually incorrect.  America actually doesn’t have a designated official language like so many other countries, according to MSN.com.  Now, obviously English and Spanish are the most commonly spoken languages in the US, at nearly 92%.  However, it’s the third most common language that differs depending on what New England state we’re talking about.

Do you think you can guess the third most common language spoken in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or Maine, for example?  What about Rhode Island, Vermont, and Connecticut?

Ok, so before I looked at this WordFinder study, I decided to guess on my own.  I guessed French for Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire, and Portuguese for Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

What do you think?  Ok, having lived in four of the six New England states, I did guess correctly all the way around.  I’ve never lived in Maine nor Vermont.  However, bordering Canada feels legit for French, even if the other states took a minute for me to decide.

According to MSN.com, German is the most third spoken language in 13 of our states, followed by French, Chinese, Portuguese, and Arabic.  Many states also have a fourth and even fifth language, while a few don't even have a third language.
