It's not an insult to say that people in Maine like what they know. That even applies to things like convenience stores where a recognizable name like the Big Apple or Cumberland Farms makes the people of Vacationland feel like they're home.

While those convenience stores and others are standards throughout Maine and New England, there's another convenience store chain that has been dominating the rest of the east coast in popularity for years.

That would be Wawa. But if you were hoping that Wawa would begin moving into New England or Maine, it doesn't appear to be happening.

Wawa Announces a Major Expansion of Stores That Doesn't Include New England

According to Men's Journal, Wawa has laid out an ambitious plan to open as many as 700 new locations over the next 5 years. Considering that Wawa has been predominantly an east coast operation, you'd think they would expand further up the east coast into Maine and New England.

Think again. Wawa's expansion plans are directed towards the midwest. Wawa sees a void they can fill in the midwest. They likely view that as a better business option than trying to overtake familiar brands like Nouria, Rusty Lantern, Cumberland Farms and the Big Apple in New England.

What Makes Wawa So Popular?

One thing many people in Maine wonder is why Wawa is so popular in other parts of the country. It is just a gas station and convenience store after all.

Wawa's overwhelming popularity can't be explained in one single reason. But most people point towards the food they offer, specifically breakfast and sandwich options. The cleanliness of their locations as well as true convenience, with most Wawa's offering both gas and electric as well as free air for customers.
