After a series of snow showers spread across Maine, people in the state were quickly reminded that many cities have winter parking bans.

Those bans typically arrive when significant snow has been forecasted or following a major snowstorm. The bans are put into place for two specific reasons, for driver and pedestrian safety as well as to expedite cleanup efforts.

But after years of issues with parked cars, fines and frustrated residents, one city in Maine has taken their winter parking ban to an entirely different level.

Rumford, Maine, Bans All Parking at Night on Public Roads Regardless of Weather

The city of Rumford, Maine, posted a reminder on their social media page for residents. That all parking on public roadways from 11pm until 6am is prohibited for the next six months. And it doesn't matter when it's a blizzard outside or crystal clear.

It's a new public ordinance for this winter that was voted into place by Rumford residents. Although, based on the number of confused comments under the social media post, many residents may have missed the memo on the vote.

The prohibitive winter parking ban is set to last until April 15 unless it's lifted early by the city's select board.

The Balance Between Snow Removal and The Need For Parking

Rumford's new winter parking policy will likely have plenty of eyes on it. If it works with minimal public complaint, it wouldn't be surprising to see other towns and cities in Maine attempt similar ordinances.

As town and city budgets get tighter, being more efficient with winter storm cleanup is essential to keep costs down. Being able to execute cleanup overnight on empty roads could be seen as invaluable despite the disturbance for some businesses and residents.
