A new bill being considered by the legislature would create a new Interstate Highway spur from South Portland to Gorham, potentially easing the traffic in the greater Portland area.

According to WGME 13, the Maine Legislature's transportation committee will consider a bill sponsored by a Gorham lawmaker that would create a new section of highway.

The Forecaster reports that Rep. Andrew McLean, D-Gorham, who represents parts of Gorham and Scarborough, is sponsoring a bill that would authorize construction of a 5-mile highway extension that could cost upwards of $100 million.

“The traffic congestion in southern Gorham and northern Scarborough is considered by many to be the worst in Maine,” John Duncan, director of the Portland Area Comprehensive Transportation System.
