Amazon Proposes Costco-Sized Warehouse For Gorham, Maine
For about the last year, there has been some lively debate in the town of Gorham, Maine, about the company Amazon.
The first debate came over whether another the sale of a large parcel of land to the retail giant should even be approved.
That debate eventually hit the wall and the Gorham Town Council approved the land sale to Amazon.
Now, there's another lively debate that has been sparked following Amazon's proposal for a massive warehouse on their newly-acquired land.
Amazon Proposed 146,000 Square Foot Warehouse Be Built in Gorham, Maine
According to the Portland Press Herald, Amazon has officially filed their proposal for a sprawling 146,000 square foot warehouse distribution center in Gorham, Maine.
For comparison, the Costco retail warehouse in Scarborough, Maine, is listed at 161,000 square feet.
Much of the ire from Gorham residents as well as surrounding towns stems from the amount of potential increased traffic the facility will bring.
Both larger and smaller delivery vehicles would consistently be leaving and returning to the proposed facility along an already busy Route 25 in Gorham.
However, in their proposal, Amazon noted that daytime deliveries from the warehouse would take place during non-peak traffic hours.
The Amazon Warehouse in Gorham, Maine, Plans to Operate 24 Hours Per Day
Another concern that has been raised not just by Gorham resident but also by surrounding communities is that the potential new Amazon distribution warehouse has zero intentions of ever sleeping.
The Amazon warehouse would be operational 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
It would benefit regular Amazon customers in shortening delivery times and increasing availability of products. It would also enhance the return system across Maine.
