If you've been around Portland long enough, you likely remember how important the Comedy Connection was for nightlife in a city that once had few options. For 19 years, the Comedy Connection existed right next to the Porthole, offering local, regional and national comedians a chance to perform in Portland in a far more intimate setting than any other space in the city. The Comedy Connection was a launching spot for Bob Marley, whose headlining gigs at the club helped propel his popularity. He'd later return to work out new material in front of enthusiastic audiences.

According to the Portland Press Herald, the Comedy Connection closed in October of 2012 due to building code violations. While the comedy club was popular, it didn't break the bank when it came to profit, and then repairs were too expensive for the club to continue on. There was hope the Comedy Connection name would live on at another venue in Portland, but that never materialized.

Now, after a decade without it, comedy is set to return at the Porthole on Wednesday, August 24. Shared on Facebook by Curtis Vanisaac Smith, the Porthole plans to book a series of comedy shows at the restaurant/bar and is hopeful to bring back some of the laughs that used to be a consistent event on the waterfront. The Porthole has plenty of live music booked through the beginning of October, and will add comedy to the mix to diversify their entertainment options.
