Portland, Lewiston, Brunswick and Biddeford have all been hit hard in just a short period of time, losing beloved restaurants as a set of factors continues to pile up against the industry. From cost of goods to cost of labor as well as disposable income for customers being lower. It all adds up to restaurants counting every penny.

Cracker Barrel Has Been in Trouble Since the Pandemic

As a chain, Cracker Barrel has been in financial trouble since the pandemic. Part of Cracker Barrel's charm is offering meals at lower prices and relying on cheaper supply and volume of customers to make up the difference.

That business model has been a problem nationwide for the chain, as they closed several restaurants in 2024 and appear headed down the same path in 2025. Currently, Cracker Barrel still operates more than 600 restaurants across the country.
