30 Years Ago: Dave Matthews Band Played 2 College Campuses in Maine
In the early '90s, the Dave Matthews Band, known passionately as "Dave" by his fans, was on the cusp of blowing up world wide, and him and his band didn't even know it. Recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hallf of Fame, it wouldn't take long for them to transition from intimate venues to larger stages and eventually stadiums.
Two notable performances during this period were in Maine and they happened 30 years ago. DMB appeared to be on a college tour making stops at the Gray Athletic Building at Bates College in Lewiston on January 28, 1995, and at the Maine Center for the Arts in Orono at UMaine just a few days later on February 2.
At both shows, DMB delivered a solid setlist that included fan favorites and what would soon be hit songs from their breakthrough album "Under the Table and Dreaming." This is one of the many "Ah man, I wish I was there for that!" concerts. Just days later, in Orono, the band gave fans another mix of what would turn out to be classic Dave tunes.
The opportunity to see one of your favorite bands in an intimate setting before they are playing in front of 20,000+ fans is a pretty awesome experience. I was able to locate the setlist for both of those shows.
These Maine performances are fondly remembered by fans as part of DMB's journey from local gigs to packing stadiums around the world. It's always been pretty obvious that DMB's commitment to their band and their fans played a significant role in their rise to fame. Their induction into the Hall of Fame is a testament to the hard work and passion that began in small venues across the country, including those memorable nights here in Maine thirty years ago.
