Shucking Amazing: South Portland, Maine’s SoPo Seafood Getting National Recognition
Move over, Portland, there’s another local culinary town that deserves recognition.
I’m talking about a town just across the bridge from Maine’s largest city, an easy drive for just about anyone in the Greater Portland region. It’s time to let South Portland shine in the spotlight.
South Portland’s culinary scene has reached new heights. With so many new hot spots opening up, it’s starting to feel like a smaller version of its big brother, Portland.
South Portland Has One of Maine's Best Seafood Joints
One of these standout spots is a relatively new addition to the community, but it made an instant impact that’s endured since day one. I’m talking about SoPo Seafood.
Located in South Portland’s Millcreek neighborhood, SoPo Seafood is basically a one-stop shop for all things, well, seafood. It’s part market, part takeout, and part raw bar, a true triple threat.
SoPo Seafood is Loaded with Delicious Catch from Maine and the Region
Opened in 2020, SoPo prides itself on supporting the local catch and features just about everything you’d find off the coast of this great state. We’re talking lobster, crab, scallops, oysters, shrimp, haddock, hake, cod, sushi-grade tuna and salmon, and so much more. It’s high-quality, fresh, and absolutely delicious.
The location itself is a destination beyond the market, thanks to its tasty raw bar menu, which includes sandwiches, dips, and even caviar. And yes, you can enjoy a few adult beverages while you’re there.
It’s no mystery why SoPo Seafood has been such a huge hit since its inception. And it’s certainly no surprise that it was recently included on a very prestigious list from the popular food site Infatuation.
SoPo Seafood is Being Nationally Recognized for its Excellence
The site put together an article featuring the best places in America to visit this summer—and right there in the heart of the list is SoPo Seafood. Here’s what the site had to say about SoPo’s inclusion:
The church that mollusks built. The pride and joy of South Portland. These are just a few nicknames we have for SoPo, a small seafood spot and market with gigantic lobster rolls, caviar, and mix-and-match oyster shooters. Post up at a high-top table, watch the shuckers go to town, and contemplate buying a whole flounder for later.
"The church that mollusks built" might be my favorite nickname of anything, ever.
Congrats to SoPo Seafood on receiving this very well-deserved recognition. It’s always wonderful to see Maine businesses get national love—especially ones that are so beloved by their community.
