Some Stranger Things fans have seemingly turned against Metallica in an apparent discussion around "canceling" the band after learning more about their past. Last month, a Metallica song that appeared in the finale of Netflix's Stranger Things 4 gave the heavy metal outfit's mainstream profile a renewed boost in popularity.

But metal met cancel culture when the Metallica backlash emerged last week (Aug. 6) in a video made by TikTok user Serena Trueblood. The influencer hosts a fan series on the social media platform called "Is Your Fav Problematic" that covers different musical artists who have been accused of doing questionable things in the past.

In the video, Trueblood presses Metallica on past actions reportedly caught on photo or video, including when ex-bassist Jason Newsted appeared to do a Nazi salute. She also points to footage where Metallica seemed to make fun of the death of Kurt Cobain. One clip includes Megadeth's Dave Mustaine, but he was already out of Metallica at the time.

In light of Trueblood's Metallica installment, some commenters responded with regret for making Metallica purchases. They appeared to be some of the same new fans spurred by Stranger Things' use of Metallica's "Master of Puppets" in a pivotal scene. On TikTok as well as Twitter, others defended the band. In July, Metallica welcomed new listeners.
