For many people throughout the state of Maine, their local general store is considered a lifeline.
General stores are known across the state as a place where you can get just about anything. From some light groceries to takeout food, hardware and even a wedding gown if you know the right place.
There are lots of general stores in Maine that have been around for as long as people can remember.
One of those general stores has been located in Saco, Maine. An iconic spot called the Way Way Store.
Unfortunately, the Way Way Store is going away. Permanently.
The Way Way Store in Saco, Maine, Announces It's Permanently Closing
Shared on Facebook, the official Way Way Store page made a simple announcement. The store has closed permanently.
The Saco, Maine, institution declared that the store has closed forever and the owners have retired with gratitude.
The original Way Way Store opened in 1916 out of a barn that was located way, way from downtown.
The current location was constructed in the late 1920's and its unique design earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Way Way Store in Saco, Maine, Had Closed Once Before
While this closure of the Way Way Store seems permanent, it's happened before.
According to the Saco Bay News, the Way Way Store closed in 2003 before being reopened in 2011 for its second life.
The Way Way Store had been operating on a seasonal basis as a tourist destination more than anything.
Will it find another life again? Only time will tell.
