On Aug. 21, 1987, Metallica released their first-ever EP, The $5.98 E.P.: Garage Days Re-Revisited.

They weren't quite ready to record a full-blown studio album following the death of Cliff Burton, and so instead of jumping into the studio with a bunch of ideas for new songs, they decided to put together an EP of cover songs from bands that were huge influences to them. This marked Jason Newsted's first official recording with the band and served as the perfect bridge between Master of Puppets and ...And Justice For All.

On last night's edition of The Ultimate Metallica Show, you know we had to pay tribute to the EP. In addition to playing every track from The $5.98 EP, we also celebrated Metallica's recent gig in Buffalo as well as pulled out a cover song from an Australian punk band that we've never played before.
