This Maine City Ranked Top 50 In U.S. For Rat Infestations
According to the yearly rankings by pest control company Orkin, one Maine city made the top 50 in the county list for number of new rodent treatments performed from September 15, 2020 to September 15, 2021....Portland! Portland came in at number 38 out of 50.
This marks an increase of 26 spots over the same period the year before. What could be to blame? Are rats taken over? Did we just see more of them around now that some many people are still working remotely? Are they breeding faster?
According to the press release put out by Okin the pest control company, some of the increase can be credited back to the pandemic. The hypothesis is that with so many restaurants closed during the pandemic, the rodents were forced to find new food sources.
To make matters worst, these displaced rodents where being extremely aggressive having to scavenge and locate new food sources. Even the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued Rodent Control guidance to help people deal with the situation.
Many of the rodents that were use to finding food in business establishments, had to move on, often to residential neighborhoods.
Of course no matter the location there are several tips that Orkin suggests for discouraging the rodent population from exploding:
Keep food stored away properly, Clear out cluttered areas, Keep yard and landscaping under control, Inspect around your home or business often for signs of rodent infestation, and look for any areas that the rodents could gain entry and fix them.
