33 Years Later: Remembering Van Halen & Alice in Chains Live in Maine
It’s been 33 years since one of the many legendary rock shows went down at the Cumberland County Civic Center (now Cross Insurance Arena), in Portland, Maine. We’ve been blessed with a lot of them, but this one is one of those that is still talked about to this day. On October 8th, 1991, Van Halen graced the stage with their rock royalty and it was an unforgettable night.
Before the party really kicked off, there were a few groans from the crowd. Unfortunately I was not able to be at this show, but my friends at WBLM said the crowd disappointment was aimed at the opening act. A little known band at the time called Alice In Chains. It was clear everyone was there for one reason: the iconic Van Halen.
The setlist opener? That was the lead single “Poundcake,” from their album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, which was the album they were out supporting at the time and it hit like a bolt of lightning. If you’ve heard Eddie’s chainsaw sounding guitar at the intro, you will understand how it would be the perfect way to get the fans fired up.
Gone were the concerns about the virtually unknown at the time Alice In Chains; Van Halen had arrived, and the energy was electric. The crowd was fully engaged and loving every second.
By 1991, the band was well into their third album with Sammy Hagar, showcasing an amazing setlist that kept fans screaming. While only a couple of classic David Lee Roth tracks that made the setlist—“Panama” and “Jump”—the encore was a highlight, featuring a seamless transition from the end of “Jump” into the opening riff of “Top of the World.” It was a night to remember and a night that fans of Van Halen still talk about to this day.
