Time Capsule: WCYY Remembers Markathon 2014
The WCYY airwaves are once again sounding...let’s call it “unique” this week. Why? Because the music’s gone rogue, as Markathon 16 is on! Mark Curdo, the guy behind the controls, is again surviving on caffeine and your bizarre requests and donations.
Since 2008, Mark has taken up residence (okay, maybe “camped out” is more accurate) in the CYY studio for a full week of raising funds for the Center for Grieving Children. He plays anything listeners request on the radio—as long as it’s FCC-approved. Think Village People, yacht rock, DMX belting out "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," or the dreaded Baby Shark remix. No genre is off-limits, no song too weird.
A few years in, Mark upped the ante with auctions. Listeners can bid on sweet prizes like concert and sports tickets, signed memorabilia, restaurant gift cards, or even a chance to hijack the CYY studio as a guest DJ. Every single penny raised goes to the Center for Grieving Children. Wanna bid? The auction page is here.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate the Center itself: a powerhouse of love and support for kids, teens, and families navigating the heartbreak of loss or serious illness. Markathon has become a beacon for this cause, raking in over $800,000 since its inception!
Here are some pics we dug up from ten years ago this week for Markathon 7. These include volunteers andmembers of the Center, local donating businesses and a visit from former Boston Celtic and Basketball Hall of Famer and current Mainer, Dave Cowens, one of the top 75 players of all time! We all know how much of a Celtics fan mark is so this was a big treat for him.
Want to join the fun and be a part of a great cause this holiday season? Donate here or give Mark a call in the studio at 207-777-9400.
